The symposium organized by Turkish Network of Urban Morphology will be held from October 22 to 23, in Mersin
University, Mediterranean Urban Research Center.
According to the symposium text; “Following the alienation experienced in Turkish cities starting mid-twentieth century; especially in the last decade, a new transformation
has started. Both of these transformations have brought about important changes in the characters of the cities. Interest in urban morphology studies has
increased in Turkey in recent years, probably by the impact of this transformation process which harms the historical and traditional texture severely, in fact, destroying
it. Like in many other countries, in Turkey too, urban morphology is entering an institutionalization process necessary for becoming an independent research discipline.
It is believed that the systematic collective store of knowledge to emerge during this process will provide input also to the fields of urban planning, architecture and
design, paving the way for the production of high quality urban spaces.
The first urban morphology symposium to be hosted by Mersin University, Mediterranean Urban Research Center and Faculty of Architecture, and organized by Turkish
Network of Urban Morphology, aiming to establish a common platform for deepening and sharing of studies taking place in Turkey to develop research and collaborations
on the field of urban morphology through scientific conferences and to enhance relationships with ISUF, International Seminar on Urban Form, home to global
urban morphology studies will seek to show how urban morphology has a place in the fields of research and application in Turkey and its level of contribution to the
processes of planning, architecture and design.”
