The painting themes of artist R. Doğu Özgün, who will open his second exhibition at the Harmony Art gallery, are constituted by culture and venue, nature and man. In his unique paintings, he displays the yearning for a home away from judgments and conflicts, for a peaceful essence, in a utopia where man is refined of the concerns for the good-bad, right-wrong, ugly-beautiful. The artist, who has lived in many different cities since his childhood, shares his personal life story with the viewers at the “Palimpsest Memory” exhibition.
He compares the unique adventure of painting to a sheet of parchment paper, which is erased and re-written. The memory layers are accumulated on the physical presence of the parchment paper. Although it becomes harder to access those at the bottom at every new scratch and re-do adventure, it never becomes impossible. The artist adds the present day on the surface of history and reinterprets the contemporary shape understanding.
The “Palimpsest Memory” can be viewed at the Harmony Art Gallery until May 32.
