Organized two times each year from 1993 until now, International Architecture Students Meeting (UMÖB) stands for an event aiming to assemble architecture students from all over Turkey. Carried out in different disciplines where students organize the workshops, UMÖB is an international architecture meeting. Arranged voluntarily by a group of architecture students, UMÖB ’16 will take place in the summer of 2016.
Meetings give an alternative impulse to the architectural education in Turkey for 23 years and students from all over Turkey with different backgrounds prospectively offer extraordinary perspectives. They find the opportunity to form new friendships and connections, share ideas, create altogether and learn from each other in the course of a week that they share in each gathering.
The continuity of the organization for several years is ensured solely through the responsibility taken by the students and the support of companies with high awareness. Each gathering is an interpretation of the undertaking organization team; it creates discourse that never falls into repetition along with the unique potentials of the city and partners.
UMÖB’16 İstanbul
The event that will take place in İstanbul this summer under the name UMÖB’16 is imagined to be in a search of freshness through abiding by the principles of ‘gathering’.
The organization team of UMÖB’16 indicate that they aim to bring concrete propositions into the ongoing discussions of the design agenda and create new fields of discussion. They search for a fiction that generates itself with mobility beyond the conventional notions and workshop arrangements.
Taking place between July 11-17, UMÖB’16 can be identified as an İstanbul experiment where its observers, inputs and outputs dissolve in each other.
Blended with the passion for the generating and questioning the activities of architecture, the dynamic nature of this event is rooted over the routes that envelop İstanbul, by contrast with a fixed settlement. Comprised of approximately 80 people, the participators will rally with executives from 4 different disciplines, in 4 groups, during 4 days and in 4 routes.
They will interact with İstanbul and Istanbulites through changing places between routes and executives. Along with this improved workshop setup, the space-based, designer-based, time-based nature of the created product will be open for discussion. After four days, they will create their own realities behind the inured and monotone identifications of İstanbul and they will experience the unique dynamics of İstanbul through becoming a part of them.
Besides, along with “Long Night” events which will be publicly held between June 12-15, Orphanage of Ortaköy will become a gathering point as the main space for the event where new perspectives about architecture will be opened for discussion. During the evening events, large-scaled prospects will be mentioned from basic design to movie and music nights, from actual problems of architecture to the alternative architectural creation methods during 20s, in order to gather all the involved people together.
