Today’s human being, who is confined to concrete buildings on the gray landscape of cities, is abandoning his search for the green on the ground, opting for searching for it in the sky. Thanks to green roofs, gardens are now carried to the roofs of buildings. Green roofs, which have rapidly developed since 1970s in Europe, have been in application in Turkey since 2003. New trends and technologies of green roofs will be put on the table for the first time in Istanbul on the occasion of 4th International Green Roof Convention to be held at Raffles Istanbul Zorlu Center April 20-21 with world famed names hosted by International Green Roof Association (IGRA).
Green roofs dating back to Hanging Gardens of Babylon are now among popular applications of contemporary architecture, thanks to rapidly developing systems. These systems, allowing plants and trees to be grown on roofs and terraces turn the gray effect created by concretization in cities to green. Green roofs which are widespread in Europe especially in Germany not only concern the eco-system but also cleanse the air of the cities. Turkey’s new trend green roofs: Considering that per capita green space in Istanbul is only 1.5 square meters, one can say that the significance of the green roof concept will grow in the upcoming years and that the market will be enlarged further.
4th International Green Roof Convention will host world famed architects, designers and green roof experts. Besides contemporary development and technologies, architectural concepts and relationship to urban planning solutions of green roofs will be debated. Again, future technologies will be addressed at the convention. The convention, which will reveal successful solutions and applications in Turkey and the world in green roof technology, will also focus on future technologies. Local government representatives from Turkey and Germany will take part at this convention.
