The exhibition “Journey to the Center of the East” showed at Suna and İnan Kıraç Foundation İstanbul Research Institute Exhibition Hall tells
the İstanbul based story of the travellers’ journey to eastern geography which started in the 18th century, going on until mid-19th century.
The exhibition, co-curated by Ekrem Işın and Catherine Pinguet focuses on the change in the mass tourism and travel culture in the years 1850-
1950. Close to 160 pieces including photographs, postcards, banners, advert signs, brochures, dinner menus and objects compiled from the
collection of Pierre de Gigord, who is one of the world’s leading collectors in the field of Ottoman era, photographs and emphemera are on
display for the viewer on the exhibition.
Gigord’s collection, which mainly includes cultural and urban images of old İstanbul, presents those interested scenes from late period of Ottomans
and early period of Republic of Turkey.
The exhibition entitled ““Journey to the Center of the East 1850-1950 – 100 Years of Travellers in İstanbul from Pıerre de Gıgord Collectıon”
may be visited at İstanbul Research Institute in ıstanbul’s historical area Beyoğlu Tepebaşı.
