“In today’s world, where every definition of acuity and categorical separation evaporates rapidly, it is inevitable for the architecture environment to mentally concentrate on accelerated time, variable locations and amphibiousness, which melt boundaries, fluidify experiences, resolve coordinates and transform them into nebulous structures. Fluid and non-fixable states of time, space, form and content, become a priori facts in order to imagine the future of cities.
It can be said that the form is always used as a control mechanism in architecture. The form gives an organizational structure to architecture as well as symbolic value along with normative qualities such as order, ratio and so on but at the same time, it also imprisons architecture to fictitiousness. In this case, formlessness can be considered as a liberating metaphor, as Georges Bataille has theorized before. On one hand, it allows the form and content to be freed from each other, while on the other hand it can trigger both new perspectives that transcend any kind of duality in the contemporary architecture environment, which is obsessed with formlessness, form and image; and also some fresh ideas for increasingly insubstantialized architecture(s).
Utopias that bring sharp criticism to the physical, social, political, economic or cultural problems of the tackled era and allow us to imagine new worlds in times where our horizons narrow; continue to serve as inspirational sources with their creativity as well as their unsettling criticism. We think that the young architect candidates will have lots of startling statements and fresh ideas with sharp criticism and creativity through the theme of formlessness, regarding the future of İzmir.”
Organized by the Izmir Association of Architects in Private Practice, the deadline for the competition is October 8.
