Stage 2 of the Taksim Urban Design Competition is now over. Organized by the the City of Istanbul’s Department of Cultural Foundations, the winners of the event were selected from 20 projects: Three equivalent prizes to Şerif Süveydan, Bünyamin Derman, and Kutlu İnanç Bal and their respective teams, and five honourable mentions to Elmira Jafari, Jaime Daroca Guerrero, Zuhal Kol, Hayriye Esbah Tuncay, and Sinan Günay and their respective teams. Nominated to compete in the second round are the twelve remaining finalists, including Yılmaz Değer, İhsan Murat Tabanlıoğlu, İnanç Eray, Mustafa Batu Kepekçioğlu, Dimitrios Zoupas, Alen Zunic, Murat Arif Suyabatmaz, Jose Munoz Villers, Hayrettin Günç, Clement Lobbens, Kei Sasaki, and Sebastian Bartnicki, and their respective teams.
The competition invites, urban planners, and landscape architects alike to shape the future of Taksim Square. Its ultimate goal is to have them “read” the intentions, demands, and implementations of socio-historical actors behind the signs that have been produced, consumed, erased, and reproduced at the square over the years.
