La Biennale de Venezia is back and marking its 17th year.
Running between May 22 and November 21, 2021, the event will host, among other
things, “Architecture as Measure” curated by architect/lecturer Neyran Turan at
the Turkey Pavilion. What’s more its website (pavillionofturkey21.iskv.org) is
now up and running, and is expected to be regularly updated with fresh content
over the course of 2021 by both the project’s curatorial team and several guest
authors, as well as dually serve as the exhibition’s main publishing platform.
“Architecture as Measure” is an installation, a web publication, and a
storytelling tool that focuses on the politics and nuances of the seemingly
mundane aspects and sites of architectural construction, juxtaposing them with
their respective planetary counterparts through geographies of material
extraction, supply chains, maintenance, and care in Turkey and beyond. In the
context of climate emergency, “Architecture as Measure” positions architecture
as a measure to provoke an alternative planetary imagination that can help us
assess our place on Earth and our role in relation to those with whom we live
together as architects with the actors of other disciplines and domains of
work, and as a species alongside more-than-human others. Schüco Türkiye, VitrA,
and the Turkish Ministry of Culture & Tourism will sponsor of the pavilion
this year under the coordination of the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and
Arts.
