Mersin Metropolitan Municipality Department of Survey and
Projects is organizing a competition for the design of urban public spaces in
Cumhuriyet Square and Çamlıbel region, located on Atatürk Street in the center
of Mersin city.
Çamlıbel holds an important place in Mersin’s urban memory. A once very vibrant
residential area, it has lost its color over the years as the city has sprawled
out both east and westwards. Therefore, the Cumhuriyet Square and Atatürk
Boulevard Çamlıbel Urban Design Contest aims to fulfill three goals: To develop
the region without harming its unique character; to revamp Atatürk Boulevard
and Çamlıbel as Mersin’s cultural hub, and thus urban focal point and to make
both a parade ground and a high-volume plaza out of Cumhuriyet Square through
urban design projects that must be of high quality, practical, sustainable and
distinct.
A total of six awards will be given in the competition. The deadline for
submissions is March 26, 2021 (if sent by snail mail, March 30). Winners have
the chance of prizes (six in total) include 75.000 TL (1st place), 60,000 TL
(2nd place), and 45,000 TL (3rd place) as well as three equivalent honorable
mentions.
