The historic Zeyrek Tiled Bathhouse in Fatih, Istanbul, has been reintroduced to the city as a cultural heritage site after 13 years of painstaking and exciting restoration work by The Marmara Group. Named after the historic Zeyrek neighborhood, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this comprehensive restoration project has taken its place on Istanbul’s culture and arts map with a museum, historic Byzantine cisterns and event and garden areas in addition to the sections that will be used as a bathhouse. Zeyrek Tiled Bath is also home to Byzantine cisterns discovered during the restoration work carried out by KA-BA Architecture. Visitors will also be able to tour the underground Byzantine cisterns, where galley figures were discovered during the construction of the bath, which may have been drawn on the walls by the galley slaves or levies of Barbarossa Hayreddin Pasha. From September 30 to November 5, 2023, Zeyrek Tiled Baths will host the exhibition “The Healing of Remains”, which covers the building’s interiors and Byzantine cisterns. Curated by Anlam Arslanoğlu de Coster, the exhibition is inspired by the 13-year restoration process of the bath, which turned into an archaeological excavation. “The Healing of Remains” explores the possibility that the layers exposed during the restoration of historical ruins can transform us on a personal and social level. Following the “Healing of Remains” Exhibition, the bathhouse will be reheated and will be open for use from the beginning of 2024.
