SALT is once again giving out research grants! SALT Research Grants encourage people to conduct research both on urban, social, and economic history of the two-century grace period between the Ottoman Empire and Modern Turkey, as well as on post-1950s [Turkish] architectural, design, and artistic works via the organization’s vast archives.
This year’s Jury Panel includes Farah Aksoy (SALT), Deniz Artun (Gaelri Nev), Asst. Prof. Dr. Bülent Batuman (Bilkent University), Asst. Prof. Dr. Burak Onaran (Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University) and Lorans Tanatar Baruh (SALT). Their task will be to decide which six research projects are worthy of each receiving a 15,000 TL grant. SALT has funded 56 projects since 2013. It looks for projects that shed light on new sources, that synthesize and explore local examples in a cross-disciplinary context, and that re-interpret established ideas through the lens of new findings. The jury will prioritize content that draws on SALT’s archives and/or inspires longterm research.
The application process is two tiered. Submissions must furthermore be in line with any discipline that SALT Research [as an organization] specializes in. Applicants are free to utilize any architecture or design-related document that promotes viewing Turkish research (published either before or after 1950) through a fresh pair of eyes, and make create a thesis topic out of that-design objects, structural environments, etc. Those wishing to research art should turn their attention to papers on local post-1950’s art history (within a regional or international framework) or on any other well-known/ printed materials. Projects on urban, social, and history should focus on the late 19th and early 20th centuries (Ottoman Empire/ Modern Turkey) and resources thereof. The submission date for pre-application is February 22 (Monday) at 18:00. Pre-applications will be reviewed based on their thesis topic and whether or not it is period-appropriate. Once approved, applicants have until March 22 (Monday) to submit their projects. 2021 grant winners will be announced on April 22 (Thursday). SALT plans to organize a open house event featuring this year’s projects-and at which the public can add their input-in December.
