Melek Zeynep Bulut’s work “Open Artwork”, a performative and experimental space setup, is exhibited at Somerset House at the London Design Biennial. The theme of the fourth edition of the biennial, which will take place this year; The Global Game: Remapping Collaborations, which explores design beyond borders, explores new forms of international collaboration, and encourages participation through multidisciplinary design.
“Open Work”, a performative space and theatrical transitions shaped around the metaphors of threshold and transformation, is based on the discussion on the meanings of concepts that represent power, determining boundaries, and social hierarchy throughout human history. The abstract doors and circulation plan created by the moving and sound surfaces that work just like an instrument interact with the visitor and transform it into a part of the settlement.
Offering an experience through perception and matter, “Open Artwork” builds its foundations on the concepts of door, passage and threshold. While the installation stands out with a monumental arrangement and size, with the visitors coming into contact with this experimental space, the inviolability is replaced by soundness and flexibility. The installation also invites a playground that leaves a gentle question mark about the new world.
