HOUSE PROJECTS BY THE ARCHITECT

CHICAGO ATHENAEUM IN 2012, WORKS
IN İZMİR, ALAÇATI
While Ilıca was the favorite neighborhood of Ceşme, İzmir, in different
times and in different ways (kings and sultans who had made use of its
hot springs during the 1800s, Levantines during the 1900s, as well as
the locals in the recent period, up until the 1980s), it has lagged behind
in the last 10 years within the dense housing trend in Alacatı, Ceşme,
thus managed to partially preserve its historical texture.
The first summer houses in Ceşme was built in Cape Yıldız starting from
1902 by Levantines engaged in trading operations in İzmir. Designed
in the land of a relatively newly-built house among others, BY House
is designed as 2 boxes on top of another, which are rather plain and
neutral in terms of their mass, instead of emulating the design of the
adjacent houses. The top box contains bedrooms, while the lower box
features the living room and the kitchen.
The road facade of the land faces the east direction, and there are only
a road and a park between the sea and this facade. Therefore the east
facade of the house is designed as transparent as possible.
The building is positioned on the southwest side of the land, which
allowed for placing the main terrace at the north facade. The top box,
which contains bedrooms that are all overlooking the sea on top of the lower box, features a 3-meter cantilever on top of the main terrace, thus
creating an open space that can be used comfortably during the whole
summer by preventing sunlight arriving at a steep angle to the terrace,
which is already on the north end and is shaded most of the time during
the day.
The pool and its terrace resting against the northern end of the land,
receives uninterrupted sunlight throughout the day unlike the main terrace.
Entirely covered with aluminum profiles, the top box also has slidingfolding
shutters made of the same material, which allowed for achieving
the simple box effect when the shutters are closed. The lower box is
clad in Cool Grey marble, which creates a contrast with the upper mass.
These stones were subjected solely to patina process in order to attribute
a soft tactile feeling to the natural stone. The TV wall clad in the same
stone along with the dinner table on the ground floor are used to carry
the material integrity of the ground floor into the interior space.
There is a 50-sqm terrace on top of the lower box, which is especially
designed for night use. Accessed via all of the rooms of the house, this
terrace also has a special steel staircase at the disposal of guests. There
is also an olive tree at the terrace so as to strengthen the silhouette of
the building.
