The jury members of 9th edition of the Industrial & Architectural Natural Stone Design Contest have been announced. The contest is open to university students majoring in industrial design, architecture, and art as well as to sector practitioners. There are two prize categories, “Student” and “Professional”. A selection committee made up of some of Turkey’s leading architects, interior designers, scholars, sector representatives, and authorized members from the Istanbul Mineral Exporters’ Association (İMİB) will pick out the winning projects.
Among those adjudicating this year’s contest include: Akın Gölcük (architect, member on the İMİB Board of Supervisors), Can Çinici (architect, founder of Çinici Mimarlık), Celaleddin Çelik (architect, founder of NUNİ Architecture & Design), Dicle Demircioğlu (architect, co-founder of GMW MIMARLIK), Dila Gökalp (architect, founder of DGA-Dila Gökalp Architects), Dilgün Saklar (co-founder of Tekeli-Sisa Mimarlık), Eda Tahmaz (interior designer, co-founder of EDDA Architecture), Emine Merdim Yılmaz (general coordinator of Arkitera Mimarlık Merkezi), Prof. Dr. Faruk Çalapkulu (TEA delegate to the Aegean Mineral Exporters’ Association), Feza Ökten Koca (architect, founder of Elips Tasarım Mimarlık) Hasan Kıvırcık (architect, founder of MTM Mimarlık), Dr. Murat Yurdakul (head of Bilecik Şeyh Edebali University’s Department of Fine Arts & Design), Neslihan İmamoğlu (editor, architect), Önder Kul (architect, co-founder of Mimaristudio), Dr. Pınar Sipahi (instructor at Yıldız Technical University’s School of Architecture), Recep Coşkun Bozanlı (member on the IMEA Board of Supervisors), Saltuk Özemir (head of Işık University’s Department of Industrial Design), Sezai Alkan (member on the IMEA Board of Directors), Vedat Öksüz (TEM delegate to the IMEA), Zafer Karoğlu (architect, co-founder of IGLO Architects), and Dr. Zeynep Yazıcıoğlu (vice dean of Istanbul University’s School of Architecture). Contestants in both categories can win cash prizes of up to 86.000 TL. The Turkish Ministry of Trade will also award first, second, and third place winners scholarships that give them the chance to study design abroad. The contest aims to bring a sustainable perspective to the Turkish natural stone sector, and thus do its apart to help it grow and flourish.
Contestants can only compete under one of the following sub-categories: Architectural, Urban Spaces, Decorative Products, Furniture, New Approaches & Applications for Living Spaces (Wall, Floor), Kitchen & Bathroom, and Public Sculpture. Furthermore, contestants are only allowed to work with Turkish stone. The preferred materials of choice: marble, travertine, granite, onyx, slate, limestone, andesite, and basalt (worth a combined annual total of USD $1.8 billion in mineral exports).
Awards and prizes will be given to their rightful owners at Design Week Turkey 2020 -a platform that both fosters Turkey’s design culture as well as promotes Turkish designers worldwide-in November.
