Aiming to evaluate the history of Istanbul’s representation through panoramic paintings and photographs with new perspectives, the exhibition critically examines the history of the “panorama” form in its various dimensions and contexts. While examining the layered relations in the production and consumption of panoramic images, it also questions the circulation of images among different audiences, the ways in which they are perceived, and the connections between different media that have gained widespread use over the centuries. The exhibition brings to light for the first time an early nineteenth-century panorama that has never been exhibited or published before. Bringing together some of the finest works by artists such as Barker, Gudenus, Schranz, Schranz, Melling, Dunn, Robertson and others, the exhibition reveals how the panoramic view was used to document different elements of Istanbul’s history, from fire disasters to industrialization.
