This year, SALT will provide 15,000 TL worth of funds to each of the six
research projects selected among 114 applications in the fields of social and
economic history of Turkey, and post-1950s architecture, design and art.
SALT Research Funds, which have been provided for a total of 48 projects
since 2013, support research studies that develop original and interdisciplinary
approaches to overlooked histories and contribute to the production
of new information.
The findings of the research projects to be determined by the selection committee,
which is comprised of Assoc. Prof. Alev Erkmen (PhD, Yıldız Technical
University), Bora Gürdaş (PhD, Hacettepe University), Prof. Alp Yücel
Kaya (PhD, Ege University), along with Farah Aksoy and Lorans Tanatar
Baruh from SALT, will be opened up for evaluation and discussion through
a presentation programme to be held at SALT Galata at the end of the year.

Biray Anıl Birer
“The Memory Pertaining to the Modernization of Early Republican Period
and Social Life in A Forgotten Coal Town: Değirmisaz”
A research both focusing on the social structure established around the
Değirmisaz coal mine (Kütahya), which was run by the state from the
late 1930s to mid-1960s and scrutinizing on the basis of daily life, social
relations and space production how the shutdown of the mine on the
accounts of inefficiency transformed the region.

“Imaginations of Anatolian Landscape: Ruminating on the Visual-
Anthropological Aspects of Films at Istanbul University Film Center”
A research scrutinizing the documentaries created by Sabahattin
Eyüboğlu at the Istanbul University Film Center between 1956 and
1972, through the relation of art and anthropology in the context of
both preceding studies and similar studies carried out by his contemporaries.
İpek Kay, Deniz Tümerdem, Elif Soylu
“A Space For Learning by Producing: Büyükdere Nursery and Horticulture
School”
A research grounding on Büyükdere Nursery and Horticulture School in
İstanbul and further elaborating the school and its land’s structure that
allows for learning by producing and co-working, the activities carried
out within, as well as the daily life in the vicinity.

“The Unknown Side of Cevizli Tekel Tobacco Factory: Women’s Factory”
A research tackling Cevizli Tekel Tobacco Factory, a factory having a
high population of women workers that was put into operation in 1967,
and the properties of its premises, the position of women workers in
stages of space development and design, and the factory’s relationship
with the surrounding buildings and settlements.

“In Ankara and Inshore: Helicon Association”
A research examining Helicon Association, which was founded in 1952
with the aim to bring a breath of fresh air into the culture scene of the
capital, and particularly its objectives, its activities that formed a basis
of discussion and production by bringing intellectuals together, its endeavor
to reach middle-class through installment sales of artworks and
its non-state structure despite being located in Ankara.

“From Yeşilköy to Atatürk, Airfield to Airport: The History of An Airport”
A research aiming to visualize the architectural history and economic
development of Istanbul Atatürk Airport, which was closed to commercial
passenger flights on April 6, 2019, as well as its transformation into
a modern aviation center, in company with in-depth archival records,
printed sources and oral history studies.
