Continuing his work in the United Arab Emirates, Layth Mahdi has designed a collection in which natural stone is shaped by robots using a series of algorithms. The collection named “Ripple”, which is dominated by fluid forms, consists of marble vases and a coffee table.
“Ripple”, presented by Layth Mahdi for the first time at the 2019 Dubai Design Week, focuses on the idea of presenting products that are a part of people’s daily life in a striking and different way by filtering them through technology.
The collection, in which advanced parametric modeling methods are used in the production process, interprets natural stone, which has a rigid material perception, through organic and fluid forms. The collection includes 7 vases and 1 coffee table, each shaped by 7 Axis robots. According to the designer, each vase was produced by robots in an average of 8 hours, while the production of the coffee table took approximately 24 hours.
Interpreting the design and technology collaboration as pushing the boundaries in terms of the results, Layth Mahdi believes that the creativity of both actors must be utilized in order to catch the perfect design quickly.
