Video artist Nil Yalter and Brazilian multimedia artist Anna Maria Maiolino “Earth House” and “Migration Hard Work” were awarded the 60th Venice Biennale’s Golden Lion prize for lifetime achievement. The awards will be presented at a ceremony on April 20. Both artists are participating in the Biennale for the first time this year, Maiolino with a monumental new clay work and Yalter with a new version of his 1973 installation Earth House, reminiscent of a traditional Turkish nomadic tent, and Exile Hard Work, a 1974 work that explores the experience of migration. The duo was nominated for the award by Adriano Pedrosa, who curated the main exhibition of the 2024 Biennale, Strangers Everywhere.
