Boytorun Architects has unveiled an elegant and omnipresent new design at the Mercedes-Benz Mengerler City Showroomnin Istanbul’s posh Etiler district. Comprised of exhibition and sales units dotted across both an approximately 330 m² closedmand 1,000 m² open space, the project is meant to strike a balance between appealing to the target clientele and existing within given environmental and physical framework. The firm has worked with the materials in such a way that they make the user feel special, all the while showcasing the principles of unobstructed design. The firm’s founders state that the project takes advantage of its surroundings. Designing it on sloping land, they had wanted the basement to serve as a continuation to the pre-existing showroom. They had then fitted the slits in its ceiling with a spider glass system in order to both to allow natural daylight to trickle in, as well as to create the illusion of cars being on the ground level. The warm, soft atmosphere of the wood and cellular fibro concrete façade encasing the showroom unfolds outwards, while the intense use of glass and lighting accentuates the Mercedes-Benz brand in a very striking manner. The architectural team chose sumptuous materials upon drawing up the executive customer waiting and private show rooms, the accessory kiosks, and the exhibition units, only then to crown each interior with a black wooden finish. For the pièce de résistance, the architects used illumination to give the showroom an unparalleled sense of drama. The team was able to envision everything using easily updatable three-dimensional modeling as a means not only of saving time, but also encouraging productivity and standardization. Doing this entailed drawing upon parametric data for each space and then applying that as things unfolded. Beyond dipping into technology, the extensive use of recycled materials throughout the project has given it an economical and environmental edge that seamlessly complies with the Mercedes-Benz’s corporate standards.
