Karaköy Restaurant, which has been the port and trade center of Istanbul throughout history and is located on the European side of the Bosphorus and at the opening of the Golden Horn, has been serving as a restaurant during the day and a modern tavern in the evening since 2000. In its new location, it has been renovated with a unique and timeless design approach that takes its atmosphere from the colors of the city, the products of tradition, and the mosaic of the multicultural society.
The most striking element of the place, the handmade tiles covering the wall separating the kitchen and dining area, were specially designed for the restaurant and carefully produced by Gorbon Seramik, one of the pioneers of Turkey’s ceramic industry. These tiles, which differ within themselves with their unlimited variety of combinations and repetitions and the unexpected play of light and shadow on their surface, add vitality to the environment with their colors.
The addition of the glass space increases the natural light of the environment and enlarges and refreshes the perception of volume of the floor plan which has 150 sqm living area, 50 sqm kitchen and service area. The marble mosaic flooring, which is applied on the entire floor, including the glass addition, creates a holistic floor perception, while at the same time it turns into a partially reflective, partially absorbent, moving floor with the combination of hexagonal marble pieces with glossy and matte surface finishes.
The wooden modular ceiling, which covers the entire space from the entrance to the dining area, not only solves all the elements such as acoustic control, air conditioning, lighting, music broadcasting with its angled and deep form, but also gives an identity to the environment by activating the large ceiling surface.
In the bar, appetizer counter and service sections, the stainless steel constructive shelves hanging from the ceiling without covering the wall tiles increase the liveliness of the space by illuminating the tiles behind and the ones above them, with their hidden lighting in their details.
The glazed woodwork on the wide entrance façade brings the liveliness of the space to the street with its permeability and wide opening. Thus, creates an inviting entrance for the space.
The appetizer cabinet and bar that greet those who enter the place allow food selection and beverage service while you wait. The bar counter, which takes an active place at the entrance with its long, monoblock structure, softens the use of natural stone with its rough and matte surface. The mirror-covered wall behind the bar ensures that the wooden ceiling system continues to reflect and adds depth to the entrance area.
The large glass on the left of the entrance transforms into a “Window”, a continuation of the showcase installations that Karaköy Restaurant started with a different concept in its previous location, with the “citation” displayed on its surface.
