Gokceada DC House and its’ Auxiliary House are located in Çanakkale, Gökçeada, Bademli Köy. The Greek name of the town is Glyki and the name is inspired by the almond trees around the fields. The town is located 4 km from the center of the island.
Regarding the buildings, the Survey – Restitution – Restoration projects were prepared and approved by Canakkale KVKB Kurulu Müdürlüğü (Canakkale Council of Monuments) as a 2nd group monument. The House which was built with a stone masonary system was preserved in a very good condition; but the Auxiliary House was ruined. During the planning of The Restitution Project, the design was based on references made by the architect Aristidis Passadeos in his book “I Laiki Arxitektoniki Tis Imvrou” (The Vernacular Architecture of Imbros) as well as on statements by local inhabitants. According to the book and the statements, the auxiliary house had a depot area, an oven and two main living rooms. The main house had an entrance in the middle of the building. There was a staircase in front of the entrance. On the right and on the left of the staircase there were room and storeroom spaces. On the upper floor there were two rooms. Bademli was a town where Greek people lived predominantly until the 1960’s, largely a settlement consisting of houses with gardens. The house and the auxiliary house, along with their planning system and details are typical examples of Glyki architecture. The main house’s orderly stone work reflects the elaborate work of the owners.
In the design process of the Restoration Project the main aim was to keep the original planning scheme and retouching it according to contemporary needs. The entrance of the building and the position of the staircase has been kept, although in a different way, A utility area was designed in order to replace the toilet washing machine and combi area. In the past years the area which was arranged as a food depot, was redesigned for a similar purpose, a kitchen and a dining area. On the right of the entrance hall, there is a living area with a fireplace which has preserved its previous function. Upstairs there are two rooms. One living room with its original fireplace and a bedroom with an en – suite bathroom. In the area of the bedroom and the en – suite bathroom, the walls are not as high as the roof. In order to disconnect the walls and the roof, a construction with a door made of glass and iron ensured the continuous flow of light among the spaces and the roof area. As a characteristic quality of the building, there is a balcony with a view of the garden over the entrance door.
