Rectangle Studio founded by photographer Derya Atıcı and interior designer Tarık Korkmaz, is a collective design office based in Istanbul and Assos-Ahmetçe that works on interior design furniture design, advertising photography, and video. In the Damda Stone House project, they took the stone at the center of the design and shaped all the other elements around it in order to harmonize the modern design concept with a stone house in the village of Ahmetçe in Kazdağları. Saying that nature shapes the process by presenting a recipe for design, the designers preferred to use the materials at home while preserving their naturally deformed appearance. The wall stones used in the foundation construction of the house, the wood used in the ceiling and floor, and the immovable furniture were re-functionalized for use in the space. The wood of the section used as a barn at the entrance of the old building was recycled by using in the construction of the pergola on the terrace and in the ceiling construction. The micro cement used as a flooring material provides a one-piece surface appearance while highlighting the natural stones used on the walls and specially designed furniture. The main purpose of the designers has been to reinterpret the wooden and stone elements that have changed their form over the years, with new and modern areas of use. Since the building has no garden and opens directly to the road, the designers met the need for communication with the outside with large openings and terraces. While the stonework was solved with the cooperation of local craftsmen and related companies, most of it was undertaken by the studio’s teams in Istanbul.
