The first phase of the project prepared with the proposals to organize Beşiktaş Square and its surroundings carried out by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality has been completed and put into practice. The area between Beşiktaş Pier and Beşiktaş Street, known as Beşiktaş Square, has lost its functionality over the years due to the density of urban equipment, irregularity, destruction of green areas, and occupation of public spaces. It was decided to make an arrangement in order to re-establish the relationship of the people of Istanbul with the sea, to solve the pedestrian traffic due to intensive sea transportation with circulation and to organize it together with the square, and to increase the proportion of green space. The project, carried out by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, envisages radical transportation solutions that will regulate the intense pedestrian and vehicle traffic in the area. The aim of the project is to solve the pedestrian-vehicle relationship at an optimum level at the intersection of different transportation systems, to highlight the true identity of the squares, to ensure the spatial integrity of the square with other historical buildings and to provide rest, sightseeing and transportation for the city residents.
