Located in Izmir Alaçati, inspired by the spirit of its 130-year history, Alaçatı Stone House’s interior and landscape works were designed by Erdem Hamza Architecture. The restoration project of the building was prepared by Saruhan Architecture in 2008. The application of the building, which was restored in accordance with the original by working with local craftsmen and local materials, was completed in 2012 and registered by Izmir No. 1 Conservation Board in 2018.
This building, which was used as a residence where olive oil and gum tree resin was extracted, aims to reveal the hidden layers of the past by referring to the spirit of the former stories with its sleek design. The spaces were designed with the aim of a calm and peaceful life, coming to life again among the stone walls bearing the old traces of this structure. Thus, it offers different experiences to its users in different time zones, every time and in every place.
This house, which has a central garden, allows the user to enter the space from a large garden, filtering between open and closed outdoor spaces and providing a transition to the interior space. Indoor access, inside the house while walking outdoors continues with a natural, independent and fluid plan that allows exploration. The building program consists of two floors, the entrance floor and the first floor. At the entrance there are 3 bedrooms, a kitchen and a study, and on the first floor there is a living room, a dining area and a bedroom. The pool, which is placed in the garden and forms a wide surface, is created by the reflection of the green and sky movements inside the building, and plays an active role in keeping it mobile. The façade inspires the interior and allows the same feeling to be experienced in the interior with a 130-year-old raw color tone. Interior spaces meeting the modern life requirements of the user were repurposed to meet it. Garden and interior setup, light and shadow plays, hidden details, use of light materials have been the main factors in the holistic design of the space. By creating an interface in the space with the ceiling and wooden beams, a living space feeling is aimed with the discovery of light and shadow. In order to strengthen the preserved atmosphere of the place and to remain local, gum tree plant figures reflecting the spirit of the past are emphasized on the walls.
All the furniture has been specially prepared for the project and tried to be brought together in harmony with simple forms that contribute to the atmosphere, and local and long-lasting materials that can give life to the changing users. In addition, local stones belonging to the Aegean region were used in the project..
Alaçatı stone house offers a peaceful environment to its users and visitors without losing its 130-year-old identity.
