“Perhaps it has been a long time since we forgot the feeling of stepping on the earth barefoot, the aroma of a natural landscape, walking in an olive orchard, feeling the wind blowing from the sea like we’re in a garden when sitting at home.
Yes, as if we, city dwellers, gave up all of this when we chose to live in the city. Nature, sea and olive orchards remain as an escape plan for holidays…
We always prepared an escape plan in the complex life we live in… Perhaps we turned cities into places to escape from gradually. We dreamed of the places we will run to…
Çeşme homes were designed with an architectural approach, making you feel as if you were sitting in your garden when you are at your living room. The borders of the home went into the garden, the borders of the garden to the park, the borders of the park to the sea and the sky, the landscape.
The design, in the entirety of which natural materials are used, includes ordinary masonry walls just like a village home, massive wooden decks like in a wooden boat, gardens to be sown like in a vineyard home, canopies to rest under, a spiny natural landscape texture like in nature, olive and mastic trees.
The design promises a home at a corner of Çeşme, one off, just for those who will live in it, combining local and current architectural ideas, itself striving to be part of nature in communication with it.
A home for stepping barefoot on earth to feel the wind coming from the sea, to lie down on the wooden deck, to cool down in the shade of a stone wall, and to sleep in the olive orchard…
The homes simply comprise two parts. One stone; the other wood and steel. While one is heavy, stationery and fixed; the other is light, transmissive and moving. This dual state is based on the working of the home. Bedrooms and wet spaces are in the stone home; the living room, the kitchen are resolved in the wooden home.
This dual state simply shapes the border laying strategy of the building in a simple manner. The stone home shifts towards the border, sets up the exterior perception of the settlement and becomes a wall. The wooden section moves towards the inner yard and the sea, opening up and becoming transparent.
The settlement comprising 15 single units in total is rather small. Still, the design was set up for creating a staged magnitude perception and an orderly hierarchy from private spaces to open ones, in connection with architectural tectonic, sea and orientation relationships.
One of the most important reasons for this is that there are refined specimens of the traditional “stone house” production in the neighborhood.
However, beyond all these, the design connects to the distinction forms of architectural function groups, general outdoor setup principles and use of stone, steel and wood.
The design setup with a texture varying by rough states of the masonry wall and different states of light, powerful with its precision and its opaque state used as basic elements establishing the design language.
