Organized by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV) with the support of Koç Holding, the sponsor of the 2007-2026 Biennial, the 17th Istanbul Biennial began between September 17 and November 20, 2022. The 17th Istanbul Biennial, in which artists, thinkers, writers, poets, researchers and participants from many other fields contribute individually or collectively with local communities, can be visited free of charge this year as well. The projects, which have been carried out in cooperation with communities from different geographies of the world for more than two years, opened to interaction in various districts of Istanbul during the 17th Istanbul Biennial. Events, interventions, and unexpected meetings were considered as the part of the exhibitions. Curated by Ute Meta Bauer, Amar Kanwar, and David Teh, the 17th Istanbul Biennial spans many different venues, including museums and traditional art venues in Istanbul’s historical districts, as well as bookstores, second-hand booksellers, hospitals, cafes, and a subway tunnel under Taksim Square. The Suna and İnan Kıraç Foundation Pera Museum, which hosts many Istanbul Biennials; the Performistanbul Live Art Research Area (PCSAA), which unites performance artists under one roof and supports their production; Central Greek Girls’ High School, one of the oldest Greek schools in Istanbul, which has been closed since 1999 and SAHA Studio, started by SAHA as a guest, interaction and production program for artists and curators are one of the prominent venues of the biennial.While Museum Gazhane and arthereistanbul are among the biennial venues in Kadıköy, there are exhibition venues that will be opened to biennial visitors for the first time this year in the historical Fatih district. Barın Han, The Çinili Hamam and Küçük Mustafa Paşa Hamam are some of them. In addition, Medicinal Plants Garden in Zeytinburnu will be one of the venues that will host the biennial and various performances in this region.
