A BLACK ACCENT BASALT LINE STRETCHES ACROSS THE SPACE LIKE THE HORIZON,
A FEATURE THE ARCHITECT JASPAR JANSEN UTILIZED TO CONNECT THE LIVING ROOM AND KITCHEN.
When an old garage lying at the core of Amsterdam is attempted to be converted into a residence by its new owner, what you have is a hidden oasis, inviting nature inside. Architect Jaspar Jansen and his team i29 have sought to create a natural effect in the remodeling project, aiming to create “a feeling that as if you were right in a forest”; in their own words. Therefore, besides strategies like access to the residence from outside by a pathway and overhead indirect lighting; touches reminiscent of algae and rocks in choices of furniture and color, have captured an abstract perception of nature.
To reinforce the feeling of forest; in the 230-square-meter residence, spaces are partitioned as little as possible, using transparent structures. This has lead to the continuity of the space, assuring a spacious environment. The predominantly white color palette has created enjoyable textures divided in places by coarse earth colors, green shades and sophisticated blacks.

THE KITCHEN ISLAND IS MADE OF OAK WITH A THIN, BLACK BASALT STONE COUNTERTOP. A FOSCARINI GREGG PENDANT HANGS ABOVE THE KITCHEN TABLE.
THE KITCHEN FEATURES CUSTOM CABINETRY AND A LARGE SLIDING DOOR, BOTH MADE FROM OAK, THAT PROVIDES RECESSED STORAGE SPACE. THE BLACK THEME CONTINUES WITH THE FURNITURE, INCLUDING HAY ABOUT A STOOL AND THE HAY ABOUT A CHAIR SET.
FURNITURE ADDS A DOSE OF TEXTURE AND COLOR TO THE MINIMAL SPACE. THE LIVING ROOM FEATURES A HAY MAGS MODULE SOFA, MOROSO TAKE A LINE FOR A WALK FAUTEUIL, MOROSO PHOENIX TABLE, AND FLOS GLO-BALL LAMP.
