The winner of the “Young Architect Award”, the first one of which was held in 2014 by Independent Architects Associations operating in Ankara, İstanbul and İzmir; was Hakan Demirel. The result of the 2014 Young Architects Award, where FREA (Fatih Yavuz + Emre Şavural), Hakan Demirel and Kerem Piker were finalists; was announced at the gala evening at Architecture + Design & CERA Awards gala evening held at İstanbul Park Bosphorus Hotel on November 15, 2014. The selective committee; chaired by Suha Özkan, comprising Derya Akdurak, Hasan Çalışlar, Prof. Dr. Celal Abdi Güzer and Enis Öncüoğlu, evaluated the accumulation of knowledge of the architects enrolled in the contest, and the design contribution they made to the setting of architecture.
Young Architects Award program; held with collaboration of TSMD, İstanbul SMD and İzmir SMD, was held as the Turkey leg of India-based Architecture Design & CERA Awards. On the occasion of the contest entitled “The Golden Emerging Architect”, for which the award ceremony was held in İstanbul; in addition to Turkey, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Sri Lanka’s successful young architects were identified.
Born in Malatya in 1983, Hakan Demirel graduated from Yıldız Technical University School of Architecture in 2006. In 2008, he established Suyabatmaz Demirel Architecture Office where he presently performs his practice as a partner with Arif Suyabatmaz.
The award from “Architecture+Design & CERA Awards” is not Hakan Demirel’s first ‘young architect award’. Demirel was among the most successful 40 young architects of Europe in Europe 40 Under 40 Awards given to successful architects under 40 years of age by the “European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies” and “The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design” institutions.
