THE PERA MUSEUM AND THE ISTANBUL RESEARCH INSTITUTE TAKE THEIR EXHIBITIONS ONLINE
During
these troubled times-when virtually all forms of social contact as well as
cities have come to grinding halt to prevent any further spread of the corona
virus-Pera Museum and the Istanbul Research Institute have uploaded their
collections online for art lovers everywhere via Google’s Arts & Culture
platform. While both institutions plan to remain closed to the public throughout
the epidemic, that has not stopped them from placing their exhibitions on the
Internet for those cannot live without their daily culture and art fix.
Google’s platform allows artoholics the chance to hover their magnifying glass
over works from the Suna and Inan Kıraç Foundation’s out-of-this-world
collection alongside urban culture in Istanbul. They also can take virtual 360
degree tours of the “Intersecting Worlds: Ambassadors & Painters” and
“Osman Hamdi Bey” exhibitions. Other Pera collections open to digital museum
goers include “Portraits From The Empire,” “Istanbul: The City of Dreams,” and
“Coffee Break,” alongside “Language of the Wall” (one of the world’s most
comprehensive collections on graffiti), and “Write, Write, Write,” a collection
which brings together colourful art produced by children at the Pera Learning
Studios. However, the true pièce de résistance is “Taksim: The Heart of
Istanbul”. Through photographs, engravings, and maps, this exhibition covers a
period beginning with the 19th century and ending with the 1960s, and is an
attempt to shed light on the changes and transformations of Taksim Square. You
