After reaching Izmir in the Aegean, Urla in Izmir and Yağcılar in Urla one arrives at the region in between the two seas—right at the halfway between the Gülbahçe shores of the Gulf of Izmir and the Demircili shores of the Gulf of Sığacık as the crow flies, is “İkidenizarası” (literally meaning in between the two seas) in Yağcılar village.
Once the life in Yağcılar was dramatically changed, in 1924, by the exchange of its Greek populations with the current inhabitants from Thessaloniki, and now it is set to change again, this time by the whisper of genius loci, as if to rekindle this land’s long lost memories. While Yağcılar was like any other village in Anatolia, doomed to loose its populations to urban centers, it will soon defy the faith and be distinct from the rest by means of its winery and wine.
İkidenizarası has two goals: the first to produce high quality wine, and to share it with those who have a gusto for life. And, second, to make Yağcılar (despite its name meaning “oil makers”) known for its winery. With this intention in mind an enjoyable place has been brought to life where wine and its “supporting acts” can be tasted. In “Urla Wine Route,” in a place of sharing and tasting wine that was in the making for nearly three decades, nestled right in between the two seas.
